Growing up, Gillian Glenn never noticed people for their differences, but rather was taught to treat them all the same.

She has her parents and wonderful teachers to thank for that, she said.

Beginning in sixth grade, Gillian found she had a heart and passion for special education. Now, after graduating from Clear Falls High School, she will begin pursuing a degree at Baylor University to become a special education teacher.

“I’ve wanted to be a teacher since I was 7,” Gillian said. “I’ve just always looked up to them and wanted to work with and help people like they have – I really respect what they do.”

Gillian really learned she had found something she could make a future career out of when enrolled in Westbrook Intermediate’s WAVE program, she said.

“I was enrolled in a mini course called, ‘Don’t Laugh at Us, Laugh with Us,’” Gillian said. “My first day in the special education room I went home and said, ‘I’m going to be a special education teacher.’”

That experience led her to see just how passionate she was about people, especially children, and the desire to give them every opportunity she had growing up.

Being enrolled at Clear Creek ISD’s Education Village even gave her more opportunities that she may not have had otherwise, she said. She was able to spend time in the special education classes at Mossman Elementary because she could just walk over rather than having to wait until her junior year when she would have been able to drive.

As a sophomore during her seventh period class, Gillian would visit Mossman’s special education class where she would work with special needs students ranging in age from kindergarten to fifth grade.

She also took four years of sign language classes throughout high school and recently scored a 3, which is the highest score anyone at Clear Falls has ever received, on her American Sign Language Proficiency Interview.

By taking sign language classes, Gillian hopes she can better communicate with those students who may be nonverbal or have a difficult time communicating, she said.

Being able to teach to each child’s specific, individual needs, is something Gillian hopes to do as an educator.

In college, Gillian hopes to gain experience in learning these different teaching techniques so she can focus her education on learning how to teach those special needs children in Adaptive Academics.

Adaptive Academics is for those special needs children who may have a more severe mental or physical disability, she said.

“Each child is so different and they each learn in their own unique way,” Gillian said. “It’s so rewarding to know you’re giving them a safe place to be and learn how they deserve to learn – that’s what I want to be a part of.”
